VERONETTA – NUOVO VOLTO DI UN QUARTIERE

Questa parte del progetto si concentra su Veronetta, quartiere di Verona, luogo dove la maggior parte dei primi africani arrivati in città risiedeva. Lo scopo principe è quello di esplorare i cambiamenti in questo territorio, facendo particolare attenzione al confronto e al dialogo che si è sviluppato tra le persone, sia prima che dopo l’arrivo dei migranti. Veronetta – New Face In A Neighbourhood:

This phase in the project is about a connection between a people and their neighbourhood. About Veronetta, one quarter in Verona with the highest evidence of multicultural activities and the place some of the first Africans once resided in the city. With a high concentration of people from different cultural backgrounds, how has intercultural exchanged been interpreted in this neighborhood? What does the future holds for this cultural fusion and what does it mean to the rest of the city?

 MARCO DANIELON – Artigiano, residente a Veronetta:

-Io non posso più immaginare un territorio dove le persone vivono tra di loro senza relazione con l’esterno. Ma non solo con l’esterno prossimo, ma proprio un “esterno” che proviene da lontano. Questo impatto ti turba e ti fa vibrare dentro e la prima reazione è quella di rifiuto, perché viene a disturbare la tua psiche, il tuo ego.
-È impossibile pensare il territorio di Veronetta senza tutte le razze che vivono qui in questo momento. È impossibile, è un incubo.
 Marco Danielon – An artisan and resident of Veronetta:
-I can’t imagine anymore a territory where people live only among themselves without relating with the outside world. Not just outside in sense of the next door, but that which comes from a far distance. This impact that disturbs and makes you to vibrate inside that your first reaction is that of rejection, because it comes to disturb your psyche, your ego.
-It’s impossible to think of the territory of Veronetta without the different people currently living here. It’s impossible; it’s a nightmare.

MARCELLINO MARUNDO – Impiegato di banca, residente a Veronetta:

-La semplificazione credo che sia una tendenza del cervello umano. Quando tu non hai tempo per sederti e analizzare una situazione per capirla allora tendi sempre alla generalizzazione. La generalizzazione è un’approssimazione della realtà. È vero che a Veronetta c’erano dei delinquenti, ma si potevano contare. La delinquenza c’è e la cosa importante per quelli che vogliono capire, sarebbe andare a vedere il perché le persone che sono venute qui sono costrette a delinquere. Magari sono venute qui per studiare e non ne hanno avuto la possibilità oppure per lavorare e non ce l’hanno fatta.
Marcellino Marundo – A banker and a resident of Veronetta:
-Generalization, I think is a tendency of the human brain. When you don’t have the time to seat down and analyze a situation to understand it you always tend to generalize. Generalization is an approximation of the reality. It’s true that in Veronetta there were some criminals but you could count them. What is rather important for those who really want to understand the situation is trying to see why a person who come here is forced into criminalities. Perhaps he came here to study but he did not have the possibility, he came to work and he did not have the chance.

MUSTAPHA WAGNE – Sindacalista, residente a Veronetta:

-A me sembra che la gente non si renda conto che questo è un laboratorio per chi vuole studiare il fenomeno dell’immigrazione. In Veronetta, vedi tutte le etnie, le razze e diversi modi di fare le cose. C’è una forte concentrazione di immigrati e chi ha paura di questa nuova  realtà  dovrebbe vergognarsi.
-Le associazioni italiane, quelle di immigrati, il comune: dobbiamo lavorare assieme per il bene della nostra Veronetta.
Mustapha Wagne – A trade unionist in Veronetta:
-It appears to me that people don’t understand that this place is a workshop for those who want to understand the phenomenon of immigration. In Veronetta, you see all ethnics, all races and different ways of doing things.  There is a high concentration of immigrates and shame on him who is afraid of this new reality.
-The Italian associations in this neighbourhood, the immigrant association, the local council; we all need to work together for the good of our Veronetta.

PIERLUIGI GRIGOLETTI – Architetto, residente a Veronetta:

-Nel momento in cui questo posto diventa un miscuglio di persone che vengono da fuori e che cominciano a relazionarsi con altri, che iniziano a chiamare amici da fuori e che trovano casa vicino per loro …. questa è un’evoluzione normale, deve essere così. Se non ci fosse questa componente, Veronetta sarebbe diventata un deserto ormai. Nel corso degli anni Veronetta è stata abbandonata dalla gente che viveva qui. Il bisogno delle persone di venire a vivere qui, ha coperto il fatto che molte case erano già vuote. Senza questa componente, non dico una città morta, ma poco ci manca. 
Pierluigi Grigoletti – An architect and a local resident:
-By the time this place becomes a fusion of people who come here from the outside and start to relate with the local people, calling on friends to help them look for apartments; this is a normal evolution, it has to be this way. If not this component Veronetta would have been deserted by now. This had happened over the years because the place was abandoned by the people who were living here. The question of people coming from the outside to stay here had covered up the fact that most of the houses were without occupants. Without this component, I won’t say a dead city but it was nearly there.
